The EP@D Program: External Professors at Discovery

The External Professors at Discovery (EP@D) program seeks to build ties with individuals of exceptional ability who will both complement and significantly enrich the core vision and mission of the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. Our motto is "From Cells to Societies", and our vision is to promote discoveries at the emerging interfaces among fields rooted in the common language of information. WID is dedicated to advancing theoretical and laboratory research in distributed, information-rich systems.

Appointments to the title of EP@D are by nomination only and determined by peer review overseen by the WID6 theme leaders and the Director of the WID. There are a fixed number of positions available and appointment is on a yearly basis with the option for renewal.

The primary roles of EP@D are:

1. Actively engaging with our resident researchers and students
2. Bring a fresh new perspective to the core mission of WID
3. Help us to identify the best and brightest minds to bring to WID and UW Madison
4. Promote interactions and collaborations among Discovery researchers
5. Move Discovery into areas where our research might achieve maximum impact and promote entrepreneurial activity.

Not all of these roles need to be fulfilled by a single appointment, but all EP@D will contribute in two or more of these areas. There is the expectation that EP@D will spend a minimum of two weeks a year in residence in Discovery, though this need not always be in contiguous stretches of time. The EP@D will not assume faculty responsibilities and voting rights within Discovery.

Requirements for the appointment include a nominating letter from a member of the WID faculty, a statement of research interests, and an up to date CV.
