Afterschool Expeditions
Monday, May 21 | 2:30 p.m.
This event is free and intended for elementary and middle school students. Adult supervision is required. Drop-ins are welcome; registration is required for groups of 10 or more youths.
Students are invited to explore, engage and discover science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Mondays from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Every week different presenters will provide engaging hands-on activities and volunteers will help lead students in the exploration of the Town Center's many interactive features such as searching for fossils in the floor or viewing the macro- and microworld using the 3-D microscopy niche.
Discovery Challenge Poster Symposium
Wednesday, May 23 | 9:00 a.m.
Registration is required for this event and is free if you register by May 9.
The WARF Discovery Challenge, part of the student ambassador program, aims to promote cross-disciplinary research. It provides a forum for students to share research results, exchange ideas and improve their communication skills. Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers will compete for a total of $2,000 in cash prizes at the poster symposium and a chance to apply for mini-grants providing up to $5,000 to pursue original, cross-disciplinary, collaborative research.

Campus Conversation: H5N1 Influenza Story
Thursday, May 31 | 2:00 p.m.
Campus Conversation: Biomedical Research and National Security - Learning from the H5N1 Influenza Story is open to the public. Registration is required.
Recently, controversy erupted over news that two teams of researchers had identified mutant H5N1 influenza viruses capable of being transmitted from one mammal to another, unlike currently circulating strains of H5N1. A U.S. government advisory board recommended that papers reporting this research be published in redacted form.
Influenza research is by no means the only instance in which scientific advances meant to benefit society could also be turned to nefarious purposes. In this Campus Conversation, we will discuss lessons learned from the H5N1 story. Dr. Yoshihiro Kawaoka will speak about the H5N1 influenza research carried out by his laboratory, one of the two projects that gave rise to the recent controversy. William Mellon will discuss existing policies and regulations for the oversight of such "dual use" research. And Pilar Ossorio will discuss ethical frameworks for analyzing intersecting concerns about public safety and scientific advancement.

Interested in learning how the Living Environments Laboratory uses virtual reality, computer modeling and modular, information-collecting "intelligent" surroundings to simulate home, work, community or almost any place patients may need care? Want to know more about how observing people as they navigate these settings gives designers and medical scientists key insights into the ways biology and technology can and will intersect in everyday living?
Come to the Living Environments Laboratory open house and tour the CAVE, an immersive 3-D virtual reality environment! You can find out how the Living Environments Lab theme aims to accelerate the design and development of personal healthcare technologies.
